Sourdough cinnamon rolls! Mmmmmmm! Now here’s a perfect blend of sweet and tangy along with a gooey center, fluffy dough, and smooth cream cheese frosting. What more could you want?!
Lately in our house Cameron and I have been obsessing over cinnamon. We’ve been adding it to pretty much anything that has any sort of sweet taste to it. Our favorite lately has been to add it to our kefir pancakes but cinnamon and sugar potato chips (all organic of course) have been on the menu as well.
Growing up, I remember when my mom would make cinnamon rolls as a special treat. It was a lot of fun helping her roll out the dough, sprinkle the filling all over, rolling it up, and cutting the dough into the cute little rolls.
It always amazed me watching the bread rise all by itself! Cameron thought it was cool when I used dental floss to cut the cinnamon roll dough, a trick Mom taught me.
I also remember grabbing an ooey gooey cinnamon roll from Cinnabon whenever we hit the airport. For obvious reasons, I LOVED going to the airport!
Unfortunately, all that high fructose corn syrup, fast rising yeast, margarine, veggie oils, GMO nasties, food dye, and preservatives aren’t doing you any favors. I mean have you looked at the ingredient list of those things?
For your reading pleasure:

And that is just the list for the dough! Yeah … definitely think twice before ordering one of those things again!
Fortunately, I have a great sourdough cinnamon roll recipe to share with you here. It’s all from scratch and made with REAL ingredients.
The sourdough might seem weird at first, but it provides only a hint of flavor that actually accompanies the other flavors nicely. It’s not overpowering. The sourdough provides a probiotic benefit as well as mitigates the damaging effects of flour. Find out more about sourdough in our ultimate sourdough starter guide!
Top it off with refined-sugar-free cream cheese frosting, and you’ve got a cinnamon roll that’s MUCH healthier than what you’d typically buy at the store or make at home. And just as delicious!
You see, we’ve learned that the secret to sticking to a real food diet is to not give up our favorite foods! We’ve just realized that we need to use healthy, all-natural ingredients that nourish our bodies rather than destroy them.
We still make things like pizza, chips, cookies, and of course, cinnamon rolls. Those foods (prepared in healthy ways) keep us sane and give us the willpower to avoid pigging out on foods that make us fat and sick.

Update 1-15-16 – I went to make these the other day and realized that some of the ingredient amounts were off. Sorry! I guess that’s what happens when you have 10 different versions you’re working with to figure out which one is the best! I also added some baking soda and baking powder which made these more fluffy.
