Juice cleanse seems to be the buzz word of the day lately. Probably because celebrities like Nichole Richie, Julia Styles, Salma Hayek, and Olivia Wilde are raving about them.
(Notice that it seems only women have the willpower to do it? 😉 )
But seriously, juice cleanses aren’t for everyone.
Most Americans eat crap food like pizza, fries, beer, soda, and other prepackaged and processed junk. Add in the fact that in 2015, less than 18% of American adults ate the recommended amount of fruit, and less than 14% consumed the recommended amount of veggies. (source)
And while those people need it the most, we’ve seen that 99% of Americans have at least one ailment or symptom that could be improved or done away with completely with a juice cleanse!
Most people in our society think that acne, arthritis, getting sick once a month, having to take a nap everyday, and chronic disease is normal. Guess what? It’s not normal!
They also think there isn’t anything we can do about it. We’re just getting old. But, like Tony Horton says, “Aging is for people who don’t know any better.”

Day after day, you and I are slowly filling our bodies with toxins. They’re in our tap water, the air you breathe, plastics, processed foods, cleaners, soaps, cosmetics, and a million other places. One day of that stuff doesn’t hurt, but over time, a faucet leaking a single drip can fill a bucket.
And our bodies aren’t real good at getting rid of that stuff.
If our bodies were these perfect detox machines, then why do heavy metals stay in our bodies?
We know that detoxing alcohol from our blood taxes our liver – so why wouldn’t synthetic chemicals in our food, makeup, lotions, soap, and air do the same?
If we were talking about a teensy bit of toxins and our bodies were functioning at peak capacity, we could probably handle it just fine. But I think we can both agree that there’s nothing natural about the toxins we encounter in our current society. Add in our SAD (Standard American Diet) and there’s no wondering why we’re sicker than ever before.
Our body stores those toxins in the soft tissues in our bodies. (source) And what’s nice and soft and pillowy? Fat.
Some toxins have even been coined “obesogens” because they disrupt the endocrine system and metabolic processes which cause people to gain weight faster than ever. (source)
Fat cells have had decades of time to store unwanted toxins. Our bodies have a hard time dropping weight until the toxins are expelled because your body is trying to protect itself.

Eating junk food to an American is like Longbottom Leaf to a Hobbit – it’s a part of life and an essential social activity.
But, you’ve also known people masquerading as herbivores. They’re always chomping on an apple or eating a salad. Your mind says “Man, I could never do that. I hate that stuff.” And guess what? At one point, those people probably thought the same thing.
But you can do it too!
I know you can, because I know people can rid themselves of the addiction to chemicals and literally change what their taste buds want and find pleasure in.
I’m a living example. I’m not sure I know someone who hated veggies as much as I did, but now I find myself eating them all the time. I eat small salads most days. I even craved a salad once! Many of my dinners are cooked with tons of veggies, like celery and peppers in my chili or salsa-covered chicken.
Don’t get me wrong, you won’t confuse me with a stegosaurus anytime soon, but I can tolerate most vegetables and eat them every day without feeling like my life is coming to an end.
Trust me, that’s progress.
Of course, going from patron saint of Pizza Hut to eating vegetables, sourdough bread, and fermented condiments isn’t an easy change. Like detoxing from any addiction, you’ll crave that stuff harder than a drowning person wants air.
Sure, you can slowly retrain your taste buds, but juicing rips the band-aid off completely. Do a week or so, and your sweet tooth (or grease tooth?) will be virtually gone.

So, I mentioned that toxins like to hang out in our soft tissues? That includes your joints as well.
