The health conscience would love to find a natural heartburn remedy that works fast. Unfortunately, most people don’t really know what causes their heartburn besides certain foods or laying down too soon after eating or drinking.
It’s terrible, isn’t it?
Barely being able eat without your chest or throat feeling like it’s on fire?
Relying on pills every four hours or the pain returns with a vengeance?
Afraid to lie down at night because the pain *might* be more than you can handle?
That’s what at least 15 million Americans experience every day. Heartburn, acid reflux, or the chronic form called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
But few experience true relief. Like most “modern” diseases, you’re given stop-gap medications instead of actual cures. And the sad part is that science shows the root cause behind heartburn and how to treat it.
Wouldn’t you like to get off the pills and find a natural heartburn remedy that actually heals your body?
Let’s dive in – and stick around to the end where we’ll talk about how to end your GERD naturally. For good.
What Really Causes Heartburn?
The common logic goes like this:
For some reason, your body has too much stomach acid (brought on by spicy foods or smoking). All that extra stomach acid splashes into your esophagus, burning everything in sight. Catastrophic pain follows.
Furthermore, Jonathan Wright, MD, records in his book:
When we carefully test people over age forty who’re having heartburn, indigestion and gas, over 90 percent of the time we find inadequate acid production by the stomach.
Between your stomach and your esophagus is a little flap called the lower esophageal valve (LES). It normally opens to let food pass downward, or for, um, stuff to come back up. When your LES malfunctions, hydrochloric acid can sneak into your sensitive esophagus.
Since it’s freaking ACID, it doesn’t matter how much gets up there – it’s going to damage you. It’s your LES’s fault, not because you randomly produce more acid than the guy or gal next to you.
Why Place the Blame on Your Trusty LES?
LES malfunctions don’t just happen to 60 million Americans. Your heartburn worsens because of the things you already know about – lying down, bending over, obesity, smoking, spicy foods, and other common triggers.
But those aren’t the actual causes.
It all starts with low stomach acid, because that leads to two other issues that directly cause your heartburn:
In a healthy stomach, you’d have enough acid to destroy anything resembling a wussy bacteria. But remember, your heartburn comes from too little acid, meaning those bacteria can now survive where they normally shouldn’t.
In one study, patients suffering from GERD took Prilosec (a powerful acid suppressor) for 3 months. By the end, over 1/3 had developed significant bacteria in their stomach.
And what do living organisms, like bacteria, do?
They give off gas!
When your stomach doesn’t have enough acid, it’s not going to be very efficient at digesting food in your stomach. Low acid levels make it difficult to break down carbohydrates in your stomach. They sit there long enough, and they ferment.
And what do fermenting things do best?
Give off gas!
All this extra gas in your stomach increases the pressure in your abdomen, forcing your LES open. Acid leaks through, and you’ve got heartburn.
Eureka! We’ve figured it out!
Can you see why antacids don’t work?
They’re based on the wrong idea that too much stomach acid causes your heartburn. Antacids are designed to counteract the acidity in your stomach. They raise the pH, causing the acid to be less corrosive. It works as a temporary stop-gap because the weakened acid won’t burn your esophagus as much.
But your acid is a certain pH for a reason – to kill off the extra bacteria and digest carbs. Heartburn meds weaken your stomach acid (that’s already too low), contributing to the excess gas in your stomach that pops your LES open!
Unfortunately, most western medicine is laser-focused on treating symptoms, not curing the underlying cause. There’s too much money to be made from keeping you popping antacids every few hours for the rest of your life.
Case in point: Nexium (the most popular acid reflux meds) did over $4.4 billion (that’s with a b) in sales in 2014. That type of money isn’t available from the all-natural suggestions I’ll mention here soon.
The sad part is that all this information is readily available to anyone. I’ve cited many studies in this article that I found with my supernatural Googling skills. They’re super easy to find, meaning that the true cause of GERD isn’t such a mystery. It’s sad, and it’s why we write about these topics.
Immediate Natural Heartburn Remedy
Now that you’ve got an idea of what causes heartburn, it should be easier for you to recognize triggers and avoid them. These are some of the best (and simplest ways) to avoid the ‘burn, or get immediate relief without reaching for the antacids bottle.
Don’t Lie Down After A Meal– Since your LES is malfunctioning, an easy way to feel better is to make it harder for the acid to wash up into your throat. Let gravity do the work for you and stay upright.
Stop Eating Right Before Bed – If food triggers your heartburn, and then laying down makes it worse; don’t eat before bed 🙂
Drink Liquids Before Or After Meals – Not During – Liquids fill your stomach fast, and can help push acid up through your uncooperative LES. By all means, drink plenty of water during the day (in fact it can help with symptoms), but wait until after meals.
1 tsp Baking Soda in Water – Another temporary measure that helps to neutralize the acidity of the acid. Like mentioned above, increasing the pH of the acid makes your heartburn worse in the long run, so use this sparingly.
1 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in Water – Often your LES will loosen up when you don’t have enough stomach acid. ACV can help stop your symptoms by adding more acid.
Try A Natural Heartburn Remedy
Eating the right foods and all-natural supplements is the best form of medicine. We’re strong believers that any condition your body can develop can be healed by things we find in nature. Here are foods proven to help with your GERD.
Eat Apples, Bananas, Ginger Root Tea, Mustard, Almonds, Chamomile Tea, and Green Veggies – These are alkalizing foods that are great for healing your digestive tract, starting with your stomach. And if you’re stomach is over-acidic, it will help balance to the correct pH
Probiotics – Fermented foods such as kombucha, kefir, and sourdough promote a healthy balance of good vs bad bacteria. You can also take in pill form – just be sure to find a high quality natural brand.
Digestive Enzymes – As you get older, you naturally have a harder time digesting your food properly (it’s partially related to acid underproduction). Taking digestive enzymes (or eating more fruits and veggies) help you fully digest foods for maximum nutrients. More nutrients = more healing.
Unrefined Sea Salt – Lost in our plain white table salt are many trace minerals needed for overall health.
Healthy foods heal, and those 4 tips will help. However, for true reversal of the condition and to be free of it completely, you’ll need something a little more structured and powerful.
The Ultimate Natural Heartburn Remedy
Fruits and veggies (especially raw) contain enzymes, phytonutrients, and antioxidants that spark healthy activity in your body. They’re essential to life – but you already know they’re healthy.
But did you know that in large amounts, they cause healing to occur all over your body? We’ve literally seen arthritis clear up, back pain go away, indigestion disappear, and a diabetic person get their blood sugar back into normal range. Just with fruits and veggies.
The problem is that you’d have a hard time eating the amount of produce you’d need to trigger this type of healing. You’d spend half your life chewing on rabbit food!
A juice cleanse actually gives your entire digestive system a break because juices are absorbed with very little effort. That means no heartburn, and a chance for your esophagus to heal (sped up by the goodies in the fruits and veggies, of course).
Juice cleanses also help restore a healthy balance of bacteria throughout your stomach and gut and clean out all the junk, meaning no overgrowth that causes your heartburn in the first place.
Just imagine a team of enzymes, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and vitams being dumped in to your body and being delivered almost immediately to whatever part of your body needs healing. It’s essentially like pressing a huge “reset” button on your health!
This is one of our favorite recipes to help you get started to heal your heartburn:
