The Little Man turned one earlier this month and OF COURSE I had to make him his own little healthy chocolate cake!
Needless to say, I think he liked his cake. What do you think?
I’m going to go on a slight rant here… There are so many parents out there that give their kids the crap food because “kids don’t care.” Parents literally buy lower quality food for their kids so they can save some money. I’ve seen it in action!
“Well we’ve got crappy hot dogs or the higher quality hamburger… the kids don’t mind – give them the hot dogs! Us adults will eat the healthier stuff.”
Tell me you’ve never seen that happen.
Kids probably don’t really care if they get the crap food,
They are developing at such a fast rate and are relying on the nutrition they get to grow strong healthy bones, organs, muscles, immune system, and more.
At our house Ryker goes through about a gallon of raw milk a week while we’re drinking the pasteurized milk. He gets all the organic produce, einkorn sourdough crackers, pastured eggs, and fermented cod liver oil. Cameron and I usually end up eating the “crap” food (which is still pretty good in our house).
I do this because I want my Little Man to be as strong and healthy as he can be. He’s only been “sick” (not much more than a little cold) twice in his 1 year of life. Ryker’s pediatrician told us that
Well, dare I say one reason is because the kids get the crap food? Okay, I’m done ranting… for now. 😉
For Little Man’s birthday, we made him his own little 4-inch healthy chocolate cake to destroy! He mostly just threw it on the floor lol.
Now I know that some people puree fruit as a healthy sweetener for the baby birthday cake. I guess you could do that – I’ve never been a fan of fruity cakes, plus it’s getting easier to find Sucanat, maple syrup, and raw honey! I suppose fruit is healthier, but nowhere near as tasty 🙂
In this recipe I used sprouted whole wheat flour, which has more bioavailable nutrients and less gluten. It adds a little density, but we actually really liked the texture. I also used organic cane sugar and Sucanat for the sweeteners. You can use straight sucanat but I liked the combo version better. Our favorite brand to use is Wholesome Sweeteners – which we have found super cheap at Costco!
